The new Adults Only rating system in Australia has been the source of a lot of controversy recently with the refused classifications of Saints Row IV as well as State of Decay. However, to our surprise, we can now officially confirm that yesterday The Australian Classifications Board awarded Grand Theft Auto V with a rating of R18+.

Are you surprised? We certainly were as I am certain that I spotted a store selling marijuana in the recent gameplay trailer, and yet despite clear evidence of drug use in the game, there has been no indication whatsoever that the Australian Version of the game has been edited. “Drug Use” also happens to be the exact reason why the other two games were refused classification in Australia, so is it possible that it’s all okay because there is a particular “medical” context supporting it’s purpose? It certainly seems like Rockstar know how to find those “loop holes”.

It’s positive news for fans of the series, but it still raises a lot of questions with a rating system that we clearly don’t quite understand yet. Grand Theft Auto V is scheduled to be released on PS3 & Xbox 360 on September 17th.
